A: Background of the Institution
The Jan Shikshan Sansthan (formerly known as Shramik Vidyapeeth) is an innovative educational Scheme in the field on non-formal and continuing education and training for adults started by the Goverment of India in the year 1967 When the first Shramik Vidyapeeth was set up at Mumbai(Worli).At present 90 Jan Shikshan Sansthans are functioning throughout the country in different states.

These features distinguish the Jan Shikshan Sanssthan from other educational programmes and institutions for adults.
Jan shikshan Sansthan, Jamshedpur was established in the year 1978. It is only institution located in the Jharkhand State. Since its inception,it offers various Polyvalent Education-Cum-Vocational training programmes as per the need of the client groups or organisations. The programmes and acitivity conducted by the Sansthan include the following :
Traing programmes in skill formation and skill upgradation for potential youths, dependents of workers, migrants , men and women belonging to unorganised & informal sector, slum workers etc.in both industrial /urban/rural areas.
Training programmes for key resource person, master trainers and trainees in vocational courese and also for neo-literates.
Nodal continuing education centre and coordinate, supervise and monitor 10-15 continuing education centres/nodal centres;
To organise equivalency programmes through Open Learning Systems;
To promote National goals such as Secularism, National integration, population and development education, women's equality , protection and conservation of enviroment etc.
To widen the range of knowledgeand understanding of the social, economic and political system in order to create a critical awareness about the enviroment among the potential youths;
The programmes would be based on the polyvalent or multi-dimensional approach to adult education.The polyvalent approach attempts to provide knowledge and skills in an integrated manner and based on the following principles :
A worker/neo-literate have continuous access to education and training throughout his life;
Each programme is need-based
As needs vaey widely,programmes are :

The methodology of training includes :

TARGET GROUP
The Jan shikshan Sansthan concentrate on socio-economically backward and educationally disadvantaged groups of urban/rural population such as men, women and youths, employed , self-employed , neo-literates, prospective workers and their family members as well as unemployed youth.
priority is to be given to adult neo-literates/semi-literates. SC and ST, women/girls.oppressed migrants,slum/pavement dwellers.

The Directorate of Adult Education (DAE), ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt.of India provide necessary technical guidance and support services and reviex the programmes from time-to-tiime.The JSS courses are distinguished from other formal Education and Technical courses by the fact that these are designed mainly considering the need the clientele or organisations and are flexcible in nature.
The planning and implementation of the programmes is carried out keeping in view the target group,the employment and self-employment opportunities and the available infrastructure and resource person.The courses are generally tailor made and built around the specific needs of groups of participants taking into account their educational level,aptitude and receptivity. Life Enrichment education (LEE)relevent to the course and the participants is included in the curricula to develop better outlook and awareness of the beneficiaries. Emphasis is laid on practical work combined with related theoretical instrrucation.Programme monitoring evalution and certification are in-built in all the programmes.
Classes are arranged in the Institute Campus as well as in different localities,bustees and village of the entire District and nearby areas. The classes are organised through Extension/field centres & conducted in week days for 2-4 hours daily.The duration of the courses vary from one type to another type ranging from seven days to six months. The sansthan also provides Library facilities to its trainees in the campus and also Mobile Library facilities to the trainees at field level.
Besides the above, Jan shikshan Sansthan, Jamshedpur also organiese some coures in collaboration with Non-Govt and Govt organisation as per their needs. Courses are also organised through open-learning system and a fex accredited to National Open school (an Autonomous body under Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India). The programme are conducted by professional faculites/Resource person from Institition and Insdustries/Workshop.In few specialised programmes experts are also invited from Govt.Agencies located outside such as SISI , SRC , central Board of Handicrafts, Central Board of Food & Nutrition etc. and agencies.
It also organises various activities from time-to-time such as :
* Exhibitions, * Talks, * Seminars,
* Motivational camps, * Competitions, * Film shows etc.
The programmes and activites are planned by all individual JSS on year-to-year basis and are approved by the Ministry at the time of commencement of the financial year. The implementation of these programmes are done by JSS accorddingly.
FOLLOW - UP
A follow-up is maintained to assess the benifits accrued to the trainees by collecting information about their employment ot income generating status, either through self-employment or wage employment . Letter/information received from all centres/individual trainees/ oraganizations/groups are documented from time to time. Enterpreneurship and employment guidance is also provided to trainees. Efforts are also made to help ex-trainees to form society/self-help groups and providing technical guidance in starting their units and production centres.
Admission Procedure
The candidates interested to take admission may register their names in the prescribed Application form available from the office of Jan Sikshan Sansthan or through field centres. The candidates in the age group 15 to 35 years with some educational background are the main target group. However, candidates below the 15 and above 35 years may also participate. The candidate, if selected, can take admission in the respective trades after paying nominal course fee. Selection of the candidates and group formation are done through career counselling which are conducted regularly by the Programme Functionaries. At the field level candidates are identified through survey or list of neo-literates which are procurres from Zila Saksharta Ssamiti/NGOs.
Preferences are given to SC/ST/Other candidates belonging to socially & economically backward sections of the society. Sponsored candidates are directly admitted on the recommendation of the sponsoring organisations. The illiterate persons are motivated to participate in the functional literacy classes.
Course fee
A very nominal course fee is charged from the candidate as per the prescribed fee structure. Relaxation in course fee is admissible to SC/ST/Handicapped/Neo-literates/illiterate candidates.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Continuous monitoring of programmes are done by the Programme Functionaries of the Sansthan. Regular class/practical tests are conducted and evaluation is done by Internal and External Examiners.
Certification
The successful candidates are awarded with Certificate specifying their grade marks, only after completeion of the programmes, by the Sansthan/Affiliated Board (for NOS Courses). Participatory certificates are awarded in the case of courses scheduled for less than one month duration.
Benefit of Training Programmes
Candidates can learn or develop skills/technical abilities;
Due to qualitative and job oriented programmes, trainees can compete in Trade Tests and get employment in various organisations in our country and abroad.
Trainees can start their own establishment/unit and thus can earn their livelihood and become self-employed
Trainees may supplement the source of income of their family by executing job order work
They can advantage of General Education Programmes and can enrich their knowledge.
Approximately 3000 beneficiaries from urban and rural areas ( both male and female ) are benefited every through our various programmes.

ON GOING PROJECT
In addition to the regular Training programme being conducted, 21 JSS were selected to work on "Population and Development Education Project of Govt of India" by the Directorate of Adult Education Govt of India for a period of 2 years commencing from the year 2000.
Under this project, Jan Shiksha Sansthan, Jamshedpur has also been entrusted to educated to educate the climate groups on population & Development Education and its related subjects. The subjects covered under this project will included :
Population growth ; Adolescence education ; Small family norms ; Reproductive health
Women empowerment ; Child care ; AIDS and its Preventive measures etc.
FUTURE PROJECTS AND PROPOSALS
Post Literacy and Continuing Education
Jan Shiksha sansthan have been entrusted for organising vocational training programme in its objective under the post Litercy (PL) programme for Neo-Literates. This programme will be launched after completion of the on-going literacy programme of Zila Saksharata Samithi. It will also work as a Nodal centre for continuning education programme for potential youths including school dropouts and semiliterate persons. Under this schemes JSS will organise income-generating programmes for neoliterate and other as per the directive of the Ministry.
